You know that feeling when your mind gets flooded with a hundred thoughts at once? Your heart starts racing, your head starts thumping, and it feels like the world is coming down around you? That my friend, is anxiety in its purest form.
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders around. Many of us battle with it on a daily basis. And some of you might not even know that you are battling it.
I call anxiety a battle because when it comes down to it, that’s all it really is. A battle between our thoughts and reality.
Those of us that struggle with anxiety spend our time worrying about all of the “what if’s” and about the hundreds of situations that are going on in our heads that are most likely never going to happen.
I have been dealing with various forms of anxiety for over 10 years now. It wasn’t until I discovered what was causing it on a base level and started making simple changes everyday (I will get into later in this post) that I noticed a positive difference in the quality of my life.
Here are a few reasons why you might be struggling with anxiety:
1. You have too many choices in front you
One of the biggest forms of anxiety is decision making anxiety. We tend to think that the more options we have the better, but that is simply not the case. It is way easier to choose between two options then ten.
If a friend asks you what movie you both should watch on Netflix it is going to be way easier to pick between two or three options that you both like then scrolling through the million options on the Netflix homepage.
This same concept can apply in everyday situations.
2. You are scared to make the wrong choice
After scrolling through Netflix for hours, you have finally found a movie that you want to watch.
But wait, what if your friend doesn’t want to watch it? What if she hates this particular genre of movies? What if she has seen this movie hundreds of times? And the questions in your head never stop.
In life we often hesitate to take action because we are scared that the decision we make is going to be wrong. We also fear what others will think of our decisions.
I bet you’re wondering how to fix this never ending cycle of worry that is taking over your life and its simple.
1. Don’t Complicate it
Now I bet you’re thinking that it’s simply not that easy. And trust me I know first hand that it is not.
We often times over complicate some the smallest situations in our lives. Which brings me to my next point:
2. If something is big enough to worry about, it is big enough to pray about.
If you seek God in times of worry, he will guide you to do what is right. No matter the circumstance.
Often times we forget to pray in situations that may be small in our eyes. No problem is too big or too small for God. We have to realize that even though we might not have the power within ourselves to change things, we do have the power to surrender our problems to Him.
I have struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. Way before I even knew to call it that. I can say some days are harder than others, but I am extremely proud of where I have come from.
With these simple changes applied to your life everyday, you too can live a worry free life.
If you take a moment to stop and pray, he will work wonders in your life.
What are some things you do to help fight against the battle of anxiety?
