OMG Girl!! You have now arrived at one of the most important milestones in your young adult life – YOUR FIRST APARTMENT. I have put together a list of First Apartment Tips because I know first hand how exciting yet terrifying it is to be moving into your first apartment.
If you’re nervous, don’t worry! Moving into your first apartment is one of the best experiences ever!! Here are some things I have learned along the way to help you out just little bit.
7 Must Know First Apartment Tips
Get to know your roommates
Roommates can be a sensitive subject for some. Some people love em, some hate em. Personally, I am not roommate type of gal. Maybe I have just lucked out over the past couple years in having good roommates.
If finding roommates is something you are stressing over, I promise that it will all work out in the end! There are tons of resources out there to help you find and get to know some new potential roomies.
If you already know your roommates and are BFF’s, then you are already one step ahead of the curve girlfriend.
I will say that living with your bestfriends is a whole lot different than just being friends on a day to day basis. I have unfortunately seen many friendships fall apart after moving in together – mine included.
I am not trying to scare you, but I just want to make sure that you are 100% comfortable with who are living to avoid any unwanted fiascos.

Wait until after you move in to buy decorations
If you’re like me, decorating is the number one thing that is probably on your mind before moving into your first apartment. I remember my freshman year of college when I was in the dorms lugging all of my decorations up so many flights of stairs on move in day.
To make things easier for you, try waiting until after you move in to get most of your apartment decor. This will make move in day 10x better!
Waiting also helps you to get a better idea of your space so that you are able to figure out exactly what you need to make your apartment everything you have ever wanted and more!

Read apartment reviews before you sign your lease
Please, please, please read your apartment complex’s reviews online before you sign a lease with them. You can also reach out to people that you know that currently live there and get their take on what its like.
Apartment complexes are known to over promise and make things seem better than they really are. If you can, try to see the specific unit you are moving into to make sure everything is in tip top shape. Those model rooms can be super cute when the actual rooms look nothing like them!
Create a mock monthly budget
Since this is your first apartment, you may or may not have experience with having to pay your own bills on a regular basis.
This can drastically change your spending habits and will require you to be able to budget your money on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.
A budget will help you be able to allocate exactly how much money you can spend and where to help prevent overspending. Because trust me, you want to get in the habit of paying your own bills on time.
